Every year a girl and a boy are asked to represent the school in the Young Whistlers project.
This year Keira Farrelly and I were lucky to be chosen.
We went to Bray Emmets’ Clubhouse. Mr O’Riordan came with us.
We met other boys and girls from other schools. There were two instructors and they explained all the rules to us and also what to do when the rules are broken, e.g. if a jersey is pulled you award a free to the other team. We were given a referee jacket and a whistle to use when we are refereeing. We really enjoyed the afternoon and are looking forward to refereeing our first match.

When I went to the Young Whistlers we started with a game where you say the number or do an action like stomp your foot. The next thing was we put our hand in a referee’s gear bag, we would say something and then take it out of the bag. We did an activity where they would call you up and you would do something you’re not allowed to do in a game and something you are allowed to do. Then we learned the symbols a referee would use if the ball was out or if someone was pulling your jersey. After that we were put in groups and you had to do the best way to count the score in a game and then they showed an example. Finally we got our gear, activity pages, a whistle and a certificate.
